Our vision is to provide a safe and healthy
environment for the care and education of all children who
attend the Crèche irrespective of their gender, ability,
ethnic origin or culture.
We endeavour to provide a high-quality, child-initiated programme
that offers opportunities for adults and children of mixed
ages and stages of development to learn side by side. We acknowledge
the unique place of Maori as tangata whenua and the principle
of partnership inherent in the Treaty of Waitangi and incorporate
these principles into our curriculum.
By ensuring Crèche sessions have high adult/child ratios
with teachers who are trained and experienced we are able
to identify and develop individual children's strengths, interests
and abilities. We encourage parents/caregivers/whaanau to
be involved in each session and are guided by their recommendations
for further development. They are respected as their children's
first teachers and for their knowledge and experience of parenthood.
We provide a framework for the organisation of activities
and facilities directly related to the needs and wishes of
the local community and ensure that there is continuing opportunity
for expression and identification of those needs.
The educational programme provided at the
Crèche is consistent with Te Whaariki - The Early Childhood
Curriculum and Early Childhood Centre Regulations (1998).
It is designed to ensure that individual children become competent
and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind,
body and spirit and secure in their sense of belonging.
Our core programme is made up of activities such as animal
care, art, carpentry, dramatic/pretend play, literacy, music,
nature & science, physical games, puzzles, reading and
sand & water play. We pride ourselves in a constant rotation
and change of equipment and play areas to provide a stimulating
and challenging environment. Children are encouraged to take
the opportunity to develop relationships with teachers, other
children and adults.
Our children experience an environment rich in both European
and Maori cultures, including use of both English and Te reo
for greetings, music, wall displays and naming/counting. Books,
puzzles, music and dress-up resources in the Crèche
reflect both cultures.
Every child attending the Crèche has his or her own
portfolio with examples of work, photos and both teacher and
parent/caregiver input.

We are financially audited and visited regularly
by the Education Review Office (ERO). Click here

ERO produces evaluation reports on all New Zealand preschool
centres and schools and this information can be accessed on
www.ero.govt.nz.
The Crèche has a long association
with Northcote Point. It originated as a coffee group which
started in 1981 meeting in local homes and then later the
War Memorial Hall for a period of time. By 1984 the group
had moved into the old Council Chambers/Library (the current
Crèche venue) and was granted planning consent to operate
as a morning Crèche which gradually grew to five morning
and two afternoon sessions per week. The Crèche is
based in a heritage building and we are currently carrying
out an extensive upgrade of the outdoor facilities - see News
and Upcoming Events.
