We have five permanent teachers at the Crèche
and there are always three members of staff on duty for each
session, supported by two parents/caregivers. Our teaching
team is committed to ongoing professional development and
staff welcome the opportunity to discuss children's progress
with parents and caregivers. Our teachers treat all children
attending the Crèche with dignity and respect, and
use positive guidance to promote appropriate behaviour with
regard to each child's age and stage of development.

in New Zealand in 2002. I am a fully registered school teacher with many
years of experience in both primary and secondary schools. In New Zealand
I have worked as an ESOL teacher in a language school as well as in a
primary school. In 2005, I went back to Auckland University to do the
Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood), so that I could get into
a field I really love, working with children. I started working here at
the Northcote Community Creche in May 2010 and took over as head teacher
in May 2011. My interests include cooking and baking, doing floral
arrangements and ballroom dancing.

Hilary Funari-Roche
Hi,
my name is Hilary Funari-Roche. I have enjoyed a teaching career divided
between working with children with extra needs in their homes and schools,
and working in early childhood settings, and I am very glad to be part of
the Northcote Community Creche team this year.My diplomas are in both Early
Childhood Education and Primary teaching, with a Bachelor of Learning and
Teaching -emphasis on literacy and special needs education.I have 3 children
- all adult now and working towards their own careers, plus creating their
families. We have 6 wonderful grandchildren so far . Being grandma would
have to be my top non-work passion and animals have always been a part of
my life - though our current head count is just one very hairy labrador and
a cat. Thank you for welcoming me into your community here.

for 5.5 years. I came to New Zealand in 1993. My eldest son came to this

Our management committee is made up of teachers
and parents/caregivers.

Meetings are held once or twice per term
and we welcome anyone who wishes to help us. The committee
is responsible for:
- employing and supporting staff
- goal setting and strategic planning
- fundraising and financial management
- special events such as the Christmas parade and parent evenings
-ensuring mandatory requirements for operation are met
Around 80 families from all walks of life
use the Crèche. While the majority are from the local
area, children from as far as Albany and Ponsonby also attend.
The centre engenders a strong sense of community and pride
among the families who use it, typified by enthusiastic participation
in working bees to maintain and improve the facilities and
excellent support of fundraising events. The majority of children
go on to local kindergartens and primary schools, particularly
in Northcote and Birkenhead, and friendships among families
started at the Crèche often last well beyond these
early years.
